With nearly 1,700 employees, Camden Property Trust is marking its 15th year on this list. During the pandemic, the Houston-based landlord instituted a “pay continuation policy” that over two years paid more than $1.8 million to employees unable to work owing to reasons related to COVID-19 (including illness, health concerns, and childcare challenges); the policy ended in March 2022. Camden puts a big emphasis on continuing education for workers, spending $2 million per year on internal programs, including how-to videos for the company’s maintenance staff, and an additional $1 million annually on external programs, like mobile reskilling software. The company is also conducting an ongoing equity review of its compensation policies, and among its various equitable hiring practices, recruiters and hiring managers do not ask for candidates’ salary history.
